Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Warns Against Political Misuse of State Police

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has called for strict constitutional safeguards to ensure that state police are not exploited for political intimidation, while highlighting the need for sustainable funding.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has warned that state police forces must not be allowed to function as instruments of political harassment. Speaking at an Abuja conference titled Building a National Consensus for State Police and National Security, she urged lawmakers to ensure that upcoming legislation includes robust constitutional protections.

While acknowledging the rising momentum for decentralized policing, she emphasized that preventing executive overreach is critical. She stated that the proposed system must remain committed to the rule of law and the defense of democratic principles rather than serving political interests. Adequate, long-term funding also remains a primary concern for the senator. She argued that without solid financial backing from the Federal Government, these forces will be unable to fulfill their duties.

Her proposed focus areas for funding include the welfare of personnel, advanced training, modern technology, and enhanced intelligence operations. During the event, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan also praised President Bola Tinubu and the Inspector-General of Police, noting that their quick reactions to security issues help foster public trust.

The event drew a wide range of attendees, including security experts, government officials, and civil society advocates, all gathering to discuss the necessary frameworks for implementing state-level policing effectively.
