Plateau State Police Command Bans Warrantless Phone Searches

Plateau State Police Commissioner Bassey Ewah has officially prohibited officers from searching residents’ mobile phones without a court warrant, emphasizing the protection of citizen rights.

The Plateau State Police Command has issued a stern directive prohibiting officers from conducting unauthorized searches of citizens’ mobile devices. During a briefing in Jos, the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, explicitly stated that personnel lack the legal standing to inspect private phones on the streets without a valid court warrant.

According to Alfred Alabo, the command’s spokesperson, the Commissioner underscored a strict mandate for professional conduct among all officers. He emphasized that the police are dedicated to upholding the rights, lives, and assets of residents in accordance with international standards.

The command has encouraged the public to civilly refuse any illegal requests to view their mobile devices and to notify the authorities if such incidents occur.
