Benin Catholic Archbishop Augustine Akubeze passes away ahead of retirement

Archbishop Augustine Obiora Akubeze of the Benin Catholic Archdiocese has died at age 69, just weeks before his planned retirement.

The Catholic Archbishop of Benin, Most Rev. Fr. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, has passed away while vacationing abroad. Reports indicate he died in his sleep only one month prior to his scheduled retirement. The Archbishop was set to celebrate his 70th birthday on August 25, the milestone that would have prompted his mandatory retirement under church regulations.

Very Rev. Fr. Michael Oyanoafoh, the Chancellor of the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City, confirmed the news in a formal announcement. He noted that the Church remembers the late Archbishop for his humility and his significant influence on the community. Akubeze began his priestly service in 1987 and was elevated to Archbishop of Benin City in 2011.

The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria described the late leader as a dedicated shepherd who prioritized both spiritual growth and the welfare of his clergy. During his tenure, he served as the President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, where he was recognized for his unwavering commitment to church doctrine and his episcopal motto, which centered on bearing witness to the truth. Further details regarding his funeral services will be announced by the archdiocese in due course.
