Zelensky Rejects Trump’s Proposal for Immediate Ceasefire
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed US President-elect Donald Trump’s calls for an immediate ceasefire, stating that peace agreements without security guarantees are unacceptable.
Zelensky emphasized that the conflict in Ukraine cannot be resolved with “just a piece of paper and a few signatures.”
Following a meeting in Paris on Saturday with Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, advocating for an immediate ceasefire and the start of negotiations to resolve the Ukraine conflict.
He asserted that Ukraine “would like to make a deal and stop the madness.”
However, Zelensky clarified that this is not the case in a post on X on Sunday, December 8, where he stated that the conflict “cannot simply end with a piece of paper and a few signatures.”
“A ceasefire without guarantees can be reignited at any moment… To ensure that Ukrainians no longer suffer losses, we must guarantee the reliability of peace and not turn a blind eye to occupation,” the Ukrainian leader stated.
He emphasized that “at least several million people remain in the occupied territories of Ukraine,” firmly rejecting the possibility of Kyiv making any territorial concessions to Moscow in exchange for peace.
”It is precisely such peace through strength that we discuss with all our partners, as well as the steps and guarantees needed for the people and the state attacked by Russia,” Zelensky said.
Zelenskyy’s tweet came after his meeting with Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron over the weekend.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that he could resolve the Ukraine conflict within a day of returning to the White House.
He has also criticized the outgoing U.S. administration for allocating excessive funds to arm Kyiv. According to earlier media reports, Trump may consider enforcing a freeze of the conflict along the current battle lines, potentially leveraging U.S. aid to Kyiv as a bargaining tool.
Meanwhile, Moscow has consistently stated that a conflict freeze is unacceptable. It maintains that any resolution must involve Ukraine withdrawing its forces from Russian-claimed territories, including the annexed former Ukrainian regions, ensuring the rights of Russian-speaking populations, and committing to neutrality.
