Mixed Reactions as Tinubu Announces Super Falcons’ Cash Prize in Dollars
President Bola Tinubu has come under criticism from some Nigerians on social media for announcing cash rewards in U.S. dollars during a reception for the Super Falcons, following their historic 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) win in Morocco.
At the Presidential reception held on Monday, July 28, Tinubu declared that each of the 24 players would receive $100,000 and a three-bedroom apartment. He also announced a $50,000 cash reward for each member of the 11-person technical team, alongside national honours of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) for both players and staff.
“I have received this trophy on behalf of all Nigerians, and I say to you: thank you for the dedication, passion, and for reminding us of the strength of the Nigerian spirit,” the president said.
However, some Nigerians criticized the president for quoting the rewards in dollars, arguing that a national leader should express such awards strictly in the local currency—Naira. They voiced concerns over the optics and potential implications for the country’s monetary sovereignty and exchange rate perceptions.
Others, however, defended the announcement, pointing out that Tinubu also clarified the prizes would be paid in the Naira equivalent of the dollar amount.
The debate reflects ongoing sensitivity around Nigeria’s currency valuation and economic outlook, with commentators split between perceptions of patriotism and practical financial representation.
