Mike Carney Wins Canada’s Election, Signaling Rebuke to Trump
Mark Carney has secured a victory in the Canadian election, ensuring the continuation of his term as prime minister, according to projections from Canadian broadcasters CBC and CTV News, as well as the Associated Press.
Carney’s win signifies a major political comeback for the ruling Liberal Party, driven by a surge in nationalism in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive rhetoric and sweeping tariffs on Canadian goods.
A former central banker with limited political experience, Carney called a snap election late last month after the Liberals saw a dramatic rise in the polls, narrowing a deficit of over 20 points since the beginning of 2025.
His victory is seen as a strong rejection of Trump’s threats to annex Canada as the “51st state,” a move that sparked widespread outrage and fueled increased support for the Liberals.
While Carney’s Liberal Party has been declared the winner, it remains uncertain whether they will secure a majority in the 343-seat House of Commons. CTV News projected that the Liberals would likely fall short of a majority, while CBC stated it was too early to confirm.
If the Liberals form a minority government, Carney will need to negotiate with other parties to maintain power, a scenario that typically results in governments lasting no longer than two-and-a-half years in Canada.
The campaign was overshadowed by a deadly attack at a Vancouver street fair over the weekend, which left 11 people dead and temporarily halted political campaigning. Police have ruled out terrorism, identifying the suspect as a local man with a history of mental health issues.
Carney assumed the role of prime minister earlier this year after Justin Trudeau’s resignation. He defeated Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, who had been seen as the favorite before Trump’s intervention shifted political fortunes.
Carney has promised a firmer stance against Washington’s tariffs and pledged that Canada would invest billions to reduce its economic reliance on the United States.
Before entering politics, Carney served as governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, becoming the first non-Briton to head the latter institution.
