Man Defrauded Of N2.5 Million By Yahoo Boys Dies By Suicide
A young man in his early 30s, identified as Utibe Eteffia, has tragically taken his own life by ingesting a lethal substance after reportedly falling victim to cybercriminals, commonly referred to as Yahoo Boys, who wiped his account clean of ₦2.5 million.
According to Leadership, Eteffia operated a POS (Point of Sale) business and had been showing signs of distress prior to the incident. He allegedly posted cryptic messages on social media, including an image of a lit candle styled like an obituary and a chilling question: “Do you believe in reincarnation?”
His death has sparked shock and sorrow online, as many reflect on the growing impact of financial fraud and mental health issues in the country.
Eteffia also reportedly urged his followers to be their brother’s keeper, emphasizing the importance of showing love and extending help to those in need — a message that now reads as a poignant cry for compassion.
Neighbours revealed that in the days leading up to his death, he had become increasingly withdrawn and reclusive. He also began a disturbing countdown on social media, which many now recognise as a subtle farewell.
His passing has ignited conversations around mental health awareness, online fraud, and the urgent need for stronger community support systems in Nigeria.
The deceased, hailing from Ini Local Government Area, had faced hardship from an early age. After losing both parents young, he was raised by his aunt, who supported him through secondary school. Determined to make a living, he later received financial help from family and friends to establish a PoS business.
In an effort to navigate the harsh economic realities, he reportedly turned to social media in hopes of expanding his means of income. There, he fell prey to cybercriminals who introduced him to a cult-linked scheme under the guise of Yahoo-Plus — a notorious online fraud network that often blends ritualistic elements with cybercrime. After being manipulated and allegedly initiated into the group, he was ultimately scammed out of his entire savings.
His tragic story has stirred widespread concern, shining a light on the vulnerability of youths in economically challenging environments and the dark allure of fast-money schemes that exploit their desperation.
