Maduabuchi Idam Opposes State-Controlled Policing in Nigeria

Lawyer Maduabuchi Idam warns that creating state-run police forces in Nigeria could lead to political persecution and undermine the integrity of elections.

Human rights attorney Maduabuchi Idam has expressed strong disapproval of proposals to establish state-run police forces in Nigeria. On Thursday, he warned that transferring authority over law enforcement to state governors could prove detrimental to the country’s security landscape.

Idam stated that the current political climate, driven by individual ambition and intense power rivalries, makes state policing an unsustainable path. He argued that governors might misuse police resources to target political opponents, critics, and those who oppose their administrations.

The lawyer also expressed concern regarding the integrity of future electoral processes. He emphasized that direct gubernatorial influence over police units would likely threaten the fairness and transparency of voting across the nation.

Concluding his remarks, Idam advised President Bola Tinubu to approach the suggestion with caution. He noted that not every proposed policy is suitable for implementation, suggesting that this particular idea could worsen existing security crises rather than resolving them.
