Minister Umahi justifies why the federal government is investing rather than saving

Works Minister David Umahi explains that the Tinubu administration is prioritizing infrastructure investment over saving money to stimulate economic growth and enhance national connectivity.

Senator David Umahi, the Minister of Works, has addressed concerns regarding the Federal Government’s choice to channel funds into infrastructure instead of building financial reserves. During an inspection of the Calabar-Abuja Super Highway at the Ebonyi-Benue border on Monday, he maintained that strategic spending is vital for economic recovery.

Umahi emphasized that a developing nation cannot prioritize savings while vital infrastructure is lacking. He stated that President Bola Tinubu is focused on stimulating the economy by aggressively financing road rehabilitation and construction nationwide. According to the Minister, this approach is a proven method to boost the national GDP.

The administration inherited a damaged network of federal roads, which has prompted a surge in repair efforts. Umahi noted that active construction sites across the country serve as proof of the government’s progress, which has helped diminish public frustration over road conditions. The Calabar-Abuja project is moving forward on several fronts to ensure it meets completion deadlines. This corridor is designed to link the South-South and South-East regions to the Federal Capital Territory, facilitating easier trade and movement. Once completed, the highway will reduce travel time significantly, allowing for faster transit to Abuja, while integrated bypasses and bridges are expected to improve safety and lower traffic volume.
