Renewed Political Violence in Osun Leaves APC Member Wounded

A member of the All Progressives Congress was shot by political thugs in Osogbo, sparking fears of increased violence ahead of the Osun governorship election.

A supporter of the All Progressives Congress named Taofeek Mustapha sustained gunshot wounds on Saturday after being targeted by unidentified individuals in Osogbo. This assault occurs as anticipation builds for the upcoming state governorship election in August.

The incident took place in the Oluode-Aranyin district, drawing significant worry regarding the rising tensions between opposing political factions. Mustapha, who managed to survive the attack, explained that the assailants specifically singled him out because he was wearing a cap featuring the APC candidate. According to the victim, his attackers chased him down, fired their weapons, and subsequently fled the scene in a vehicle.

State Police Command representative Abiodun Ojelabi confirmed that authorities have launched a formal inquiry to identify the perpetrators. The violence persists despite recent efforts by law enforcement and electoral officials to foster a peaceful environment through a summit, which notably suffered from the absence of representatives from both the ruling Accord Party and the APC.
