The Owa-Onire community in the Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State now stands empty after residents fled due to constant bandit raids. A viral video confirms that the once-vibrant tourist town has been overtaken by livestock as the population seeks refuge elsewhere.
In response, the Nigeria Police have moved into the region to reclaim the area and improve security. Zubair Olaitan, coordinator of the Kwara South Joint Security network, led an assessment team to the site to gauge the instability. While Olaitan has praised the work of security personnel near the Kogi border, he emphasized that local residents must cooperate to ensure safety for those attempting to return home.
Despite ongoing military and police operations, violence continues to plague parts of the state. Criminal groups remain active across several districts, holding over 170 people—primarily women and children—from Woro and Nuku hostage. Additionally, individuals abducted during a church service in Omugo remain missing, with reports indicating that some victims have already perished in captivity.
