Authorities in Kebbi State have initiated a robust operation to identify and prosecute the members of an online criminal network identified as Yan Vocal. This group has been implicated in widespread blackmail, digital fraud, and cyber extortion. Ahmed Idris, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, highlighted that the organization poses a substantial risk to both societal peace and national security.
Official reports suggest that the syndicate primarily consists of individuals aged 19 to 24 based in the Argungu Local Government Area. They specialize in hijacking social media accounts and fabricating fake identities to intimidate their targets. By manipulating images and video call footage, these individuals coerce users of platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and TikTok into paying money under threat of exposure.
The criminal enterprise reportedly focuses on influential figures, such as business leaders, political officials, and religious dignitaries across Nigeria, Niger, Ghana, and Benin. Investigators have already pinpointed 19 primary suspects and have successfully traced their financial transactions and meeting locations.
The state government has issued a clear warning that there will be no tolerance for such illegal activities. Law enforcement personnel are actively pursuing the group to ensure they are brought to justice. Residents are encouraged to practice caution online, secure their personal data, and report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities immediately.
