Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has launched a 14-day security initiative to eradicate criminal syndicates involved in killings and abductions throughout Benue State. During a meeting in Makurdi on Thursday, the IGP characterized the local safety climate as critical and acknowledged the growing anxiety among the populace.
Disu confirmed that President Bola Tinubu has mandated a swift resolution to the ongoing violence. The operation targets various criminal elements, including armed gangs, kidnappers, and militant cult members. The police chief also issued a warning to youths against participating in politically motivated violence, emphasizing that authorities would strictly enforce gun control laws.
Officers have been directed to confront armed threats firmly under existing legal guidelines. Meanwhile, Assistant Inspector-General Francis Iduh noted that security forces have identified 14 volatile areas, such as Agatu, Kwande, and Otukpo, for intensive clearing operations. Governor Hyacinth Alia expressed support for the measure while reiterating his call for state-level policing. The Tor Tiv, Prof. James Ayatse, highlighted the need to prosecute the sponsors of these violent groups to ensure long-term stability.
