Burna Boy Says Nigerian Entertainment Gatekeepers Did Everything Possible To Break Him
Singer Burna Boy has claimed that gatekeepers in the Nigerian entertainment industry tried everything possible to block his success and break him.
He made this assertion while reacting to comments by Obi Asika, a Nigerian music executive and the Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture.
In a recent interview on the Afropolitan Podcast, Asika highlighted the difficulties Burna Boy faced on his rise to stardom, revealing that at one point, the artist struggled to secure performance slots — even when he was willing to perform for free.
“This same Burna Boy that’s a million dollars plus today, they be blocking him…He’s from Port Harcourt, he’s not from Lagos, so they be blocking him,” Asika said on the podcast.
“The same Burna Boy has bypassed everybody and exploded and now he can’t be blocked anymore.”
Reacting to Asika’s statement, Burna Boy said his revelation doesn’t cover up to half of what he experienced.
Burna wrote on Instagram: “This is not even half of the story. They did everything they possibly could to break me, they are even still trying their best lol but all they did was create this unquenchable FIRE that will continue to burn them for eternity.”
Burna Boy has previously alleged that numerous figures in the Nigerian music industry, including members of the media, deliberately blacklisted him.
He has often spoken about the challenges he faced, claiming that these individuals attempted to suppress his rise and recognition within the industry.
