Abia State Political Dispute: APC Targets Gov Otti Over Worker Welfare

The APC and Labour Party have clashed in Abia State over allegations that Governor Alex Otti is failing to pay workers the national minimum wage and ignoring promised benefit increases.

The Abia State chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has formally requested that Governor Alex Otti enhance the welfare of local workers and retirees. In a document issued by state publicity secretary Uche Aguoru, the party alleged that certain government employees are currently earning salaries significantly below the mandated N70,000 national minimum wage. Furthermore, the APC highlighted concerns regarding stagnant gratuity payments for pensioners and the failure to execute a previously promised increase in the monthly stipends for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members stationed in the region.

In a sharp retort, the Labour Party (LP) rejected these claims as fabrication. Publicity secretary Iroegbu Emenike stated that the era of pensioners suffering in payment queues has ended under Governor Otti. The LP further argued that the current APC leadership bears responsibility for three decades of state mismanagement that preceded the incumbent administration, suggesting they have no moral standing to critique current policies. Addressing the NYSC allowance issue, the LP asserted that administrative processes are required to finalize policy shifts and criticized the APC for ignoring the necessity of proper procedural implementation.
