Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, the former governor of Ondo State, believes that Nigeria must transfer authority to sub-national governments to resolve its persistent administrative and security challenges. During his address at the 74th Annual Convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, he emphasized the Jethro Principle from the book of Exodus as a divine model for functional governance.
Mimiko explained that Moses avoided exhaustion by delegating responsibilities to capable leaders, a lesson he argues Nigeria should emulate. He noted that effective decentralization requires merit and competence, stressing that local problems should be solved at the local level. While he acknowledged the Tinubu administration’s efforts to devolve certain powers, he warned that such reforms must be driven by true commitment and ability. He further observed that centralizing power in a diverse country like Nigeria often results in inefficiency and conflict.
Highlighting significant obstacles such as corruption, insecurity, and ethnocentrism, Mimiko urged citizens of all faiths to view political participation as a vital responsibility. He argued that public service is a calling to exercise authority for the common good, citing figures like Daniel, Joseph, and William Wilberforce as examples of people who used their faith to enact societal change. He concluded by encouraging professionals to enter government service, warning that avoiding public office only leaves the country in the hands of those less qualified.
