Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji, a Nigerian Army officer currently facing charges for allegedly conspiring to topple President Bola Tinubu’s government, has publicly stated that his actions were sparked by deep concerns over the nation’s declining state. Court documents reveal that these revelations emerged as part of ongoing legal proceedings regarding a group of military and civilian individuals accused of plotting, stalling, and subsequently reviving an overthrow scheme.
The Defence Headquarters has declined to offer a formal response, with Major-General Samaila Uba, the Director of Defence Information, stating that commenting on an active legal matter would be inappropriate. In his defense, Ma’aji expressed regret for his role and requested leniency, maintaining that his intentions were rooted in national interest rather than personal gain. He described the plot as a reflection of widespread distress among troops regarding poor governance, insecurity, and insufficient welfare.
Ma’aji claimed the planning initiated during the Muhammadu Buhari administration, noting that his own frustration was compounded by failed promotion bids. He denied any involvement of international conspirators, clarifying that the movement was in a preliminary phase when security services intervened. Reflecting on his detention, the colonel stated he now understands that there are legitimate avenues for raising grievances and promised to abandon such radical measures if granted a pardon.
The officer proposed significant systemic reforms to improve military morale, including better remuneration, enhanced healthcare coverage, and a more equitable system for career advancement. He also addressed national economic challenges, criticizing the sudden removal of fuel subsidies and calling for a more aggressive stance against public sector corruption. Ma’aji urged the government to focus on practical infrastructure investments to alleviate the hardships faced by average citizens, emphasizing that his actions were ultimately driven by a desire for a stable and prosperous Nigeria.
