A collaborative mission involving the Zamfara State Police and military personnel successfully secured the release of Aliyu Mohammed, an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) employee who had been abducted. Security analyst Zagazola Makama reported that this operation was part of a larger push against bandit activity in the Gummi, Talata Mafara, and Gusau areas.
The events began on July 7, when dozens of gunmen on motorcycles raided villages within the Ruwan Bore District of Talata Mafara, stealing hundreds of livestock. During the chaos, a local woman was hit by a stray bullet and required hospitalization in Talata Mafara. Aliyu Mohammed was captured while transporting National Examinations Council (NECO) materials from Gummi to Sokoto along the Gummi–Sokoto Road.
Police from the Gummi Division acted quickly, securing the victim’s abandoned vehicle and the examination papers, which were returned to the school principal for delivery to NECO authorities. On July 8, security forces engaged the armed group in a firefight starting around 2:45 a.m. The joint military and police team utilized superior tactics to overpower the bandits, who retreated into the wilderness with several injuries. Alongside Mohammed, another victim was freed, and the stolen cattle were recovered and restored to their owners.
