Benue Police Chief Mandates Removal of Illegal Roadblocks and Prohibits Extortion

Benue State Police Commissioner Cletus Nwadiogbu has issued a firm directive to dismantle all unauthorized checkpoints and illegal revenue collection points to combat extortion and improve road safety.

Cletus Nwadiogbu, the Commissioner of Police for Benue State, has commanded the instant removal of all unauthorized roadblocks and illicit toll collection sites throughout the region. This mandate, publicized on Friday by spokesperson DSP Udeme Edet, seeks to boost road safety, facilitate smoother travel, and stop the persistent harassment and financial exploitation of motorists.

This directive covers all roadways, focusing specifically on critical federal transport corridors such as the Makurdi-Lafia, Makurdi-Gboko, Ugbema-Vandeikya, Gboko-Aliade, and Otukpo-Otukpa routes. Commissioner Nwadiogbu has instructed local police commanders to oversee the immediate enforcement of this policy within their assigned zones.

Only officially sanctioned security posts, managed by verified personnel with clear identification, are permitted to operate. The Commissioner emphasized that any individual involved in setting up these unlawful sites or demanding payments will face strict legal consequences. Residents are encouraged to contact the nearest police station to report any suspicious activities or instances of extortion to ensure swift intervention.
