The Yobe State Government has issued a stern warning to public employees regarding unauthorized absences, frequent tardiness, and leaving work before the official end of the day. Officials confirmed that those who violate these policies will face consequences as outlined in the Yobe State Public Service Rules. This directive follows surprise inspections conducted by the Office of the Head of Service across various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), where investigators noted several instances of non-compliance.
In a formal circular, leadership instructed Permanent Secretaries and department heads to ensure their staff remains on-site during designated work hours. Alhaji Hamidu Isa Babi, Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Head of Service, emphasized that monitoring efforts will increase to maintain professionalism and accountability. Meanwhile, Yobe State Head of Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa Shehu, praised specific leaders, including Hajiya Salamatu Yahaya and Dr. Idris Yusuf Madaki, for their exemplary attendance during the audit.
Some staff members pointed to transportation difficulties as a primary cause for these attendance issues, suggesting that the government provide loan programs to help workers purchase personal vehicles. Other employees advocated for granting department heads more autonomy to discipline staff directly without political interference. Despite these suggestions, the state government remains firm in its mandate to foster a disciplined and efficient workforce, promising disciplinary action for any continued neglect of duty.
