Adeniyi Adeyemi, the Director General of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), is challenging his continued police detention. His legal representative, Prince Ademola Oyedokun, asserts that the police are exceeding the scope of the original bench warrant, which only permitted an arrest rather than indefinite custody without court appearances. The legal team maintains that Adeyemi has never been brought before a judge to justify his ongoing imprisonment.
Addressing the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee, Adeyemi requested that his testimony occur during a public session rather than behind closed doors. His counsel argues that because the initial accusations against the organization were made publicly, the defense should be presented in the same forum to ensure transparency. They cite Section 89 of the Constitution, which grants the committee authority to compel his appearance.
Adeyemi expressed a readiness to cooperate with the legislative inquiry, clarifying that his desire for a public hearing does not seek to obstruct the investigation. He remains prepared to answer questions regarding the origins and government connections of the council. Meanwhile, his legal team has filed for his release at the Federal High Court, emphasizing that their client has yet to be given an opportunity to formally address the allegations under oath.
