Woman Dies Following Forced Female Genital Mutilation After Childbirth in Delta State

A young woman named Emeterhire has sadly passed away in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State, reportedly after being compelled to undergo female genital mutilation (FGM) due to complications from childbirth.

Emeterhire, from the Aniocha South Local Government area, had previously fled her village to escape the harmful practice of female genital mutilation (FGM).

However, she was allegedly coerced to return and subjected to the ritual against her will.

Sources from her village reported that Emeterhire’s mother, Erhuvwun, also underwent FGM in her youth, surviving the experience but carrying both physical and emotional scars.

The community in Ogwashi-Uku views FGM as a sacred rite of passage, believed to “purify” young women and prepare them for marriage.

After years of living peacefully in Asaba, where she built a new life and was expecting her first child, Emeterhire was persuaded by her mother to return to the village.

Her mother feared that without the traditional blessings of the community, her grandchild would be cursed.

Unaware of the dangers she would face, Emeterhire returned home as her due date approached.

When complications arose during her labor, village elders—who had long harbored resentment towards her for evading the ritual—forced her to undergo the FGM procedure she had escaped years earlier.

In the early hours of the morning, while she was weakened from childbirth, the elders allegedly imposed the mutilation upon her without her consent.

By dawn, Emeterhire had tragically succumbed to the trauma of both childbirth and the FGM procedure, leaving behind a newborn child.

Her death has sparked widespread outrage, with human rights activists condemning the practice of FGM and demanding justice.

“This is a tragic example of how harmful cultural practices rob women of their lives,” a local advocate said, calling for urgent action to safeguard women and girls from such customs.
