US Pentagon Says 10 ‘High-Threat’ Migrants Are Being Held at Guantanamo

The Pentagon confirmed on February 5 that ten “high-threat illegal aliens” have been transferred to the Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba.

The specifics of their alleged offenses remain undisclosed. This move follows an order from President Donald Trump, who had previously instructed preparations for a 30,000-person “migrant facility” at the base.

While Guantanamo is mostly known for holding individuals accused of terrorism-related offenses, it also has a history of housing migrants. According to the Pentagon, the detainees are being housed in vacant detention facilities, with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) overseeing their secure detention until they can be relocated.

This development is part of the Trump administration’s broader efforts to address illegal migration, including immigration raids, arrests, and deportations, sometimes using military aircraft.

The president has made illegal migration a priority and even threatened Colombia with sanctions for refusing two planeloads of deportees.

The Guantanamo Bay prison, established after the September 11, 2001 attacks, has been used to detain individuals captured during subsequent wars and operations.

The facility has drawn significant criticism over the years, with human rights organizations condemning its conditions and United Nations experts have described it as a site of “unparalleled notoriety”.
