US Executes Man for 1998 Murder of Woman Despite Family’s Pleas for Clemency
A Missouri man has been executed for breaking into a woman’s home and killing her, despite appeals from her family and the prosecutor’s office to allow him to serve the rest of his life in prison.
Marcellus Williams, 55, was convicted in 1998 for fatally stabbing Lisha Gayle, 42, during a burglary at her suburban St. Louis home.
During Williams’ trial, prosecutors stated that he broke into Gayle’s home on August 11, 1998, heard the shower running, and armed himself with a large butcher knife. Gayle was stabbed 43 times when she came downstairs. Her purse and her husband’s laptop were stolen.
Authorities reported that Williams took a jacket to hide blood on his shirt. His girlfriend questioned him about wearing a jacket on a hot day, later recalling seeing the stolen purse and laptop in his car, and that Williams sold the computer shortly thereafter.
Williams maintained his innocence and sought to have his sentence commuted to life in prison.
However, he faced significant setbacks on Monday when Republican Governor Mike Parson denied his clemency request, and the Missouri Supreme Court declined to grant a stay of execution. The U.S. Supreme Court also chose not to intervene on Tuesday.
His clemency petition emphasized that Gayle’s relatives wanted Williams’ sentence reduced to life without the possibility of parole.
“The family defines closure as Marcellus being allowed to live,” the petition stated. “Marcellus’ execution is not necessary.”
Williams’ son and two attorneys observed from another room, while no representatives of the victim’s family were present.
The Department of Corrections released a brief statement that Williams had prepared in advance, saying: “All Praise Be to Allah In Every Situation!!!”
Republican Governor Mike Parson expressed hope that the execution would bring closure to a case that “languished for decades, revictimizing Ms. Gayle’s family repeatedly.”
“No juror nor judge has ever found Williams’ claims of innocence to be credible,” Parson stated.
The NAACP was among those urging Parson to halt the execution.
“Tonight, Missouri lynched another innocent Black man,” NAACP President Derrick Johnson said in a statement.
This was the third time Williams faced execution; it had been postponed in 2015 and 2017, but his final appeals this time were unsuccessful.
