US Embassy in Riyadh Hit by Drones Amid Rising Regional Tensions
The United States Embassy in Riyadh was targeted by two drones in the early hours of Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
The Saudi Defense Ministry confirmed that the aircraft struck the diplomatic compound in the city’s high-security Diplomatic Quarter, causing a limited fire and minor structural damage to the roof and perimeter.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a massive explosion at approximately 3:30 a.m. local time, followed by plumes of black smoke rising over the embassy district.
Fortunately, the building was empty at the time of the strike, and no casualties have been reported. While Saudi air defenses reportedly intercepted four additional drones targeting the area, the two that hit the embassy marked a significant breach in the capital’s security.
In response to the attack, the U.S. Mission to Saudi Arabia has implemented several emergency protocols. American citizens in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dhahran have been advised to remain indoors until further notice under a shelter-in-place order.
Additionally, the embassy in Riyadh is closed for all routine and emergency services on Tuesday, and all non-essential travel to military installations in the region has been restricted for U.S. personnel.
The incident has sharply increased tensions as the conflict enters its fourth day. President Donald Trump, speaking to NewsNation, warned that the U.S. response would be swift and clear. He remarked that the world would find out soon what the retaliation would be for the embassy strike and the deaths of American service members earlier in the week.
This attack follows a similar drone strike on the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait and reported damage to the Ras Tanura refinery. With the U.S. State Department already urging all Americans east of Egypt to evacuate over a dozen Middle Eastern countries, this latest strike has further accelerated the exodus of foreign nationals from the Gulf region.
