A Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer has been killed in Korokpa Village, Niger State, following a confrontation with illegal miners. The incident took place on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, around 2 pm, as reported by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSC Abubakar M.R. Muti.
The violence erupted when Mining Marshal operatives encountered resistance while attempting to enforce regulations. Despite calling for backup, one officer sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head during the exchange. Medical staff could not save his life after he was transported to a local facility.
Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, the state commandant, publicly denounced the assault and praised the fallen officer for his bravery. Authorities are now coordinating with other security forces to track down the assailants. Officials have also called upon the public to assist by sharing information that could help stop illegal mining operations in the area.
