Nigerian sprinter Success Umukoro, the 2023 National Junior College Athletic Association 100m outdoor champion, is aiming to clinch gold for Delta State at the upcoming 22nd National Sports Festival.

The athletics competition kicks off this Friday at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, featuring Nigeria’s top track and field talents battling for podium spots.

Competing in the women’s 100m, Umukoro is among the favourites to take the crown, as she looks to build on her impressive recent performances and bring glory to her state.

“I’m just here to do what I need to do and leave the rest for God.”

“I put in the work every time, so I believe I will do good. There is no pressure to deliver at all. The projection is to give Delta the gold in my event, and I trust others to get the gold as well.”

Umukoro, is the fourth-fastest Nigerian female athlete so far this year after clocking a time of 11.25s at the West Texas A&M University Track & Soccer Complex, Canyon, Texas in April.

Success Umukoro Eyes Top Spot In Fierce 100m Sprint At Nigeria’s 2024 National Sports Festival

Delta State sprinter Success Umukoro is gearing up to challenge the top contenders in Nigeria’s women’s 100m rankings at the 22nd National Sports Festival, starting Friday at Abeokuta’s MKO Abiola Sports Complex.

Currently ranked just behind leading sprinters Favour Ofili (10.99s), Tima Godbless (11.06s), and Olayinka Olajide (11.15s), Umukoro has shown strong form, notably clocking a fast 7.13 seconds to win the women’s 60m at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic earlier this year.

With around 10,000 athletes competing for 2,150 medals across 549 events, this edition of Nigeria’s premier multi-sport event—often dubbed the nation’s Olympics—is set to be one of its largest yet. A total of 626 gold, 626 silver, and 898 bronze medals are at stake.

A key innovation this year is the introduction of the Invited Junior Athletes category, allowing emerging talents like Umukoro to compete alongside veterans, providing a national platform to showcase their skills and accelerate their rise in Nigerian athletics.
