Trump Vows Mandatory Death Penalty for Killing Police Officers in the U.S.

President Donald Trump has announced that he has signed an executive order enforcing a “mandatory death penalty” for anyone convicted of murdering a police officer in the U.S.

He made this declaration during his address to Congress on Tuesday, March 4, while urging lawmakers to solidify the order into law as part of broader support for law enforcement.

“I’ve already signed an executive order requiring a mandatory death penalty for anyone who murders a police officer,” the president said. “And tonight, I’m asking Congress to pass that policy into permanent law.”

The executive order signed by President Trump does not mandate the death penalty but instead directs the attorney general to pursue it in all federal capital cases involving the murder of a law enforcement officer, wherever legally possible.

Trump’s remarks align with his campaign rhetoric advocating for tougher policing measures. Last year, he suggested that “one rough hour” of law enforcement action could curb retail theft and has also pushed for ensuring police officers have immunity from prosecution.

“We’re also once again giving our police officers the support, protection and respect they so dearly deserve.”
