Texas Teen Indicted For Murder In Fatal Stabbing At Frisco Track Meet

Karmelo Anthony, the 17-year-old at the center of a fatal high school stabbing case that has ignited racial tensions and national debate, has been formally indicted on a murder charge by a Collin County grand jury.

The indictment, announced Tuesday, June 24, by the Collin County District Attorney’s Office, follows the April stabbing death of 16-year-old student-athlete Austin Metcalf at Kuykendall Stadium during a Frisco Independent School District track meet. Anthony, then a student at Frisco Centennial High School, allegedly stabbed Metcalf once in the chest after a brief verbal altercation escalated into physical contact.

The charge of murder in Texas carries a potential sentence ranging from five years to life in prison.

A Case That Struck a Nerve

“This case has struck a deep nerve — here in Collin County and beyond,” said District Attorney Greg Willis. “When something like this happens at a school event, it shakes people to the core. But the justice system works best when it moves with steadiness and with principle.”

The deadly incident sent shockwaves through the community and stirred widespread outrage, with the added weight of race, youth violence, and public safety concerns looming large over the legal process.

Anthony, who was initially held on a $1 million bond, was released later in April after a judge reduced his bond to $250,000. The presiding judge, Angela Tucker, has acknowledged the charged nature of the case, citing security concerns for all parties involved.

The Self-Defense Claim

Anthony’s defense team maintains that he acted in self-defense — a claim that has fueled intense public debate. According to police reports and witness accounts cited by local outlet WFAA, the confrontation began when Metcalf allegedly told Anthony to leave the Memorial High School tent area. Anthony reportedly warned him not to touch him, and after being grabbed, pulled out a knife and stabbed Metcalf before fleeing.

Anthony’s attorney, Mike Howard, called the grand jury’s decision “an expected and routine step,” adding that “Karmelo and his family are confident in the justice system and the people of Collin County to be fair and impartial.”

“We expect that when the full story is heard,” Howard added, “the prosecution will not be able to rule out the reasonable doubt that Karmelo Anthony may have acted in self-defense.”

The indictment does not include detailed evidence or testimony, and Howard emphasized that grand juries are limited in what they review.

Public Pressure And A Call For Fair Trial

The case has drawn strong public reactions and sparked multiple rallies and statements from advocacy groups. The Dallas-based Next Generation Action Network, which hosted a press conference in support of the Anthony family, urged the public to allow the legal process to unfold.

“Karmelo will have his day in court — not in the court of public opinion,” the group said. “He will finally have the opportunity to present his self-defense claim in a real courtroom.”

With a trial now expected, the legal spotlight shifts to whether Anthony’s claim of self-defense will hold under cross-examination and judicial scrutiny. Meanwhile, both families and the wider community await justice in a case that continues to reverberate far beyond the track where tragedy struck.
