South Korea battles to contain massive wildfires.
Wildfires in South Korea have killed 26, destroyed 300+ structures, and forced massive firefighting efforts.
South Korea is battling its worst wildfires, which have claimed 26 lives, destroyed over 300 structures, and forced authorities to deploy thousands of personnel and dozens of helicopters. Officials suspect human error in several fires, including incidents caused by welding sparks and grass-clearing activities near family tombs. Strong winds have fueled the flames, trapping firefighters and workers, while limited rainfall offers little relief.
South Korea’s wildfires have burned over 35,800 hectares (88,488 acres), making them the worst in the country’s history. The blazes have injured nearly 30 people, destroyed about 320 buildings, and forced over 24,200 residents to evacuate. Authorities have mobilized more than 9,000 personnel and 120 helicopters to contain the fires, with acting President Han Duck-soo warning of unprecedented damage. Strong winds have worsened the crisis, prompting evacuations in Andong and Uiseong, including the historic Hahoe folk village, while fires near Jiri Mountain have put hikers at risk.
Despite earlier efforts to contain the fires, strong winds and dry conditions have reignited them, causing further destruction. The blazes have consumed homes, factories, vehicles, and historic sites, including the Gounsa temple complex in Uiseong, where 20 of its 30 structures were lost. Among them were two state-designated treasures: a 17th-century pavilion and a Joseon-era structure from 1904. In response, the Korea Forest Service has raised its wildfire warning to the highest level, urging stricter emergency measures, restricting forest access, and advising military units to suspend live-fire drills.
