Minister of Works Senator David Umahi recently announced that regional leaders in the South-East are actively negotiating a political resolution for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained IPOB leader. The Minister emphasized that these officials are dedicated to maintaining regional order and stability.
Speaking during a visit to the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project in Epe, Umahi clarified that Ebonyi State and the broader South-East remain aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He distanced the region from the Obidient Movement, suggesting that political success requires genuine service and accountability rather than deceptive rhetoric.
Umahi expressed disappointment regarding reports that former Anambra Governor Peter Obi might halt key infrastructure projects if he were to win the presidency. He argued that such projects are essential for economic growth and insisted that citizens would oppose any efforts to dismantle them. Furthermore, the Minister criticized Obi for his perceived silence on the recurring Monday sit-at-home orders in the region, which have contributed to insecurity and economic hardship.
The Minister urged supporters of the Obidient Movement to evaluate the administrative legacies of both Tinubu and Obi, specifically comparing their tenures in Lagos and Anambra. He asserted that President Tinubu’s vision for infrastructure, including current initiatives along the River Niger, is crucial for fostering national development and enhancing economic prospects for the South-East.
