Loved ones of military personnel linked to an alleged conspiracy to topple President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are demanding increased transparency and adherence to legal standards. A’isha Nana, the wife of one of the detained men, spoke to DCL English on Monday, highlighting the hardships faced by the families involved.
Nana emphasized the necessity of humane treatment for the detainees while the legal investigation proceeds. She specifically requested an end to reported torture and demanded that the officers be granted access to both legal counsel and their relatives. According to her, families were blindsided by the news of the arrests via media reports, as the military provided no formal notification.
Dismissing claims that the soldiers disclosed the alleged plot to their spouses, Nana maintained that such sensitive military secrets remain private. She urged the government to prove the allegations in a court of law, reiterating the principle that the accused remain innocent until guilt is established.
The families are calling for an open and swift trial. Nana noted that current restrictions prevent family members from attending court proceedings, which she argues is incompatible with democratic values. She concluded by urging the military to ensure fair proceedings and restore communication rights for the detained soldiers.
