Security forces thwart kidnapping raid at Monguno school

Joint military and police forces successfully repelled an ISWAP attempt to kidnap students at a temporary school facility in Monguno, rescuing 46 individuals despite some reported casualties.

On July 19, 2026, Nigerian security forces, including Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) troops and the Police Mobile Force, successfully stopped an ISWAP terrorist attack at the Federal Government Girls College in Monguno. The site currently serves as temporary housing for students from the Federal Polytechnic, Monguno.

Captain Mohammed Goni, acting media officer for the Joint Task Force, reported that the attackers gained entry with help from local conspirators around 1:30 a.m. Guards responded with heavy fire, and reinforcements from the Sector 3 Quick Reaction Force forced the militants to retreat.

The security operation ensured that none of the 46 students were taken. Those rescued were relocated to Kinnasara Barracks for medical evaluation and safety. While all surviving students are stable, authorities confirmed that some individuals were killed by indiscriminate gunfire during the skirmish. The military has expressed condolences to the victims’ families and continues to search for those involved in the attack.
