Quadri Smashes Records at Prime Atlantic Squash Tournament
Rising star Yusuf Quadri carved his name into the record books on Saturday by becoming the first junior to win both the U-19 and senior men’s titles at the Prime Atlantic Squash Tournament, hosted at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
The 17-year-old phenom defeated Nigeria’s No. 3-ranked senior player, Farouk Sulaimon, 3-1 in the men’s final, just hours after overpowering Joshua Daniel with the same scoreline in the Under-19 showdown.
“I played like a champion all through the tournament,” said a beaming Quadri. “This motivates me to train harder and come back even stronger next year.”
In the women’s category, Rofiat Abdulazeez defended her crown with a 3-1 win over Faridat Soliu, showcasing grit and composure in a tightly contested match.
“I knew it wouldn’t be easy,” Rofiat noted. “Faridat really pushed me. I respect her effort.”
Soliu, despite the loss, remained upbeat: “It hurts to lose, but I’m proud of my journey. I’ll learn from this and come back stronger.”
In the girls’ U-19 final, Aisha Abdulazeez (likely Rofiat’s sibling) stormed to victory, defeating Zainab Ishola 3-0 in a commanding performance.
Nigeria Squash Federation President, Mr. Boye Oyerinde, praised both Prime Atlantic and the Lagos State Squash Association for their role in nurturing emerging talent.
“The level of talent we’re seeing is outstanding,” Oyerinde said. “This tournament keeps pushing players to new heights. We’re excited about the future.”
