President Trump Urges 30-Day Ceasefire in Russia-Ukraine War, Threatens Further Sanctions

U.S. President Donald Trump has urged both Russia and Ukraine to agree to an unconditional 30-day ceasefire, warning that the United States will impose additional sanctions if the truce is violated.

Ukraine has indicated its willingness to accept the U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal, while Russia has countered with an offer of a limited three-day truce to align with the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, observed on Thursday.

Trump said in a social media post: “If the (30-day) ceasefire is not respected, the U.S. and its partners will impose further sanctions.”

“Hopefully, an acceptable ceasefire will be observed, and both Countries will be held accountable for respecting the sanctity of these direct negotiations,” Trump said.

“This ceasefire must ultimately build toward a Peace Agreement. It can all be done very quickly, and I will be available on a moment’s notice if my services are needed.”

President Donald Trump has reiterated his desire to end the war in Ukraine but warned that his administration may withdraw from mediation efforts if neither side shows progress toward peace.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated on Thursday that he informed Trump during a phone call that Ukraine is ready to begin a 30-day ceasefire “starting this minute.” Zelenskiy emphasized that it is up to Russia to prove its commitment to peace by agreeing to an unconditional halt to hostilities.

Ukraine’s foreign minister criticized Russia’s proposed three-day truce, saying Moscow violated it just hours after it began and calling the move a “farce.” Meanwhile, Russia accused Ukraine of continuing combat operations despite the ceasefire window.

Trump initially launched negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin in February, aiming to fulfill a campaign promise to end the conflict swiftly.

However, frustration is reportedly growing in the White House over the continued fighting, with senior officials suggesting the U.S. might reassess its role in the peace process if tangible progress is not achieved soon.
