President Trump Signs Bill Mandating Release of All Jeffrey Epstein Investigative Files
US President Donald Trump has signed legislation compelling the Justice Department to release all files related to the late convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.
The bill requires the Justice Department to make all information from its Epstein criminal investigation publicly available in a searchable and downloadable format. The files must be released within 30 days of the bill’s signing.
The documents subject to release include materials from the criminal investigations into Epstein (and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell), such as transcripts of victim and witness interviews, items seized in property raids, Internal Justice Department communications, flight logs and travel records, names of people and entities connected to Epstein’s crime, the investigation into his 2019 death by suicide.
The law allows the department to redact information only to protect the identity of victims, shield child sexual abuse material, or avoid compromising ongoing federal investigations.
It specifically bars officials from withholding information due to “embarrassment, reputational harm, or political sensitivity.”
President Trump’s signature marks a reversal of his previous stance against releasing the documents. He changed course last week following significant pressure from both Epstein’s victims and members of his own Republican party.
The legislation subsequently passed both the House of Representatives (427-1) and the Senate (unanimous consent) on Tuesday.
In announcing the signing, Trump wrote that the truth about Democrats’ associations with Epstein would soon be revealed, framing the issue as a “Democrat problem.”‘
The family of the late Virginia Giuffre praised the move as “nothing short of monumental” for survivors, adding that “Every name must be revealed, regardless of power, wealth, or party affiliation.”
These Justice Department files are separate from the more than 20,000 pages of documents from Epstein’s estate released by Congress last week. That tranche included 2018 messages where Epstein reportedly wrote of Trump: “I am the one able to take him down” and “I know how dirty Donald is.”
Trump, who was friends with Epstein for years but claims they cut ties before Epstein’s 2008 conviction, has consistently denied any personal wrongdoing related to the financier. Epstein was convicted in 2008 and died in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
