President Tinubu Expresses Desire to Welcome Pope Leo XIV to Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu met with Archbishop Paul R. Gallagher to reaffirm his government’s commitment to interfaith peace, expressing his hope for a future visit by Pope Leo XIV to Nigeria.

President Bola Tinubu met with Archbishop Paul R. Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations of the Holy See, in Abuja on Saturday. Accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, the President reiterated his administration’s dedication to fostering interfaith cooperation and peace throughout Nigeria.

Highlighting his history with the Catholic Church, specifically his time as Lagos governor, Tinubu underscored his commitment to returning mission schools to religious groups. He praised the Church for its significant impact on health, education, and humanitarian efforts within the country. The President noted his personal appreciation for Pope Leo XIV, stating his hope that the pontiff will visit Nigeria in the future to provide spiritual guidance.

Regarding national stability, the President discussed recent security improvements and the government’s focus on youth development to curb radicalization. He emphasized that religious tolerance remains a priority, citing his own marriage to a pastor as evidence of the government’s inclusive stance.

Archbishop Gallagher, visiting to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the Holy See, described Nigeria as a strategic nation for the Catholic Church. He praised the nation’s efforts in maintaining peace and lauded the progress of institutions like Veritas University. The Archbishop concluded by promising that his visit would be the first of many future engagements between the Vatican and Nigeria.
