Premier League Title Race: How the Top Five Are Shaping Up for 2025/26
Liverpool (1st, Champions)
Liverpool Eye Back-to-Back Titles After £269m Summer Spending Spree
Liverpool enter the new campaign full of belief after a historic transfer window under incoming manager Arne Slot.
The reigning champions wrapped up the Premier League title with four matches left to play, finishing comfortably 10 points clear of second-placed Arsenal.
So far, Slot’s side have invested £269 million, headlined by a club-record £100m move for Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz, a figure that could increase to £116m with add-ons.
Additional major signings include Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for an initial £69m, Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for £40m, and Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen for £29.5m. Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili also arrives from Valencia in a £25m deal, initially agreed last year.
However, Liverpool aren’t the only top side making bold moves during the summer window…

Arsenal Look to Gyokeres as £201m Rebuild Aims to End Trophy Drought
Arsenal will be counting on Viktor Gyokeres to be the final piece in their push for silverware this season.
The Gunners have spent £201 million refreshing the squad, bringing in Gyokeres from Sporting CP, Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, Noni Madueke and Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea, Christian Norgaard from Brentford, and Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia.
Departures include experienced names such as Kieran Tierney, Jorginho, Thomas Partey, and Takehiro Tomiyasu, all of whom were released.
BBC Sport’s Alex Howell reports that expectations around the Emirates are high, with the club adopting the “reach new heights” mantra. Mikel Arteta has turned Arsenal into regular contenders and returned Champions League football, but pressure is mounting to finally deliver silverware.
In pre-season, Arteta has adjusted tactics, pushing the ball forward more directly – a shift aimed at maximizing Gyokeres’ attacking instincts. If it all comes together, Arsenal are once again poised to challenge at the very top.

City Quietly Rebuild After Trophyless Season and Club World Cup Exit
Manchester City approach the new campaign looking to bounce back from a rare season without major honours, capped by a surprise early exit from the Club World Cup, where they lost to Al-Hilal in the last 16.
In response, Pep Guardiola has brought in five new players, notably Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan to bolster the midfield. Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri, James Trafford, and Sverre Nypan round out a £154m summer spend.
Veteran stars Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker have departed, the latter joining Burnley.
According to Shamoon Hafez, City may benefit from being outside the immediate spotlight, with attention focused on Liverpool and Arsenal. Still, questions remain over how quickly the newcomers will adapt, and whether City can regain their dominant form after finishing third for the first time since 2017.

Chelsea’s Youthful Squad Grows as Maresca Eyes Domestic and European Glory
Fresh off a commanding 3-0 Club World Cup final victory over PSG, Chelsea are building on their momentum with another heavy recruitment push under Enzo Maresca.
New arrivals this summer include Liam Delap from Ipswich, Joao Pedro from Brighton, Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund, and Jorrel Hato from Ajax. Previously agreed deals for Dario Essugo and Estevao Willian have also been completed. In total, Chelsea have spent £249 million.
Outgoing players include Kepa Arrizabalaga, Joao Felix, Djordje Petrovic, and Mathis Amougou.
Nizaar Kinsella notes that Maresca has united a youthful squad valued at around £1.4 billion, featuring stars like Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernandez, and Moises Caicedo. With Champions League football back on the calendar, depth was a key priority this window.
While the club’s official target remains a top-four finish, players like Levi Colwill believe the squad is already capable of contending for the Premier League and Champions League titles this season.
Newcastle (5th, 18 points off top)

Newcastle’s Quiet Window Raises Concerns Ahead of Four-Front Campaign
Newcastle United ended last season in fifth place, narrowly missing out on a higher finish. Despite strong form and renewed hope, the Magpies have endured a frustrating summer transfer window.
Their only notable signings are Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest and Aaron Ramsdale on loan from Southampton. With just £55 million spent, they’ve also lost Sean Longstaff to Leeds, and Lloyd Kelly has completed his previously agreed move to Juventus.
Ciaran Kelly reports that Newcastle missed out on several key targets including Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, James Trafford, Liam Delap, and Dean Huijsen. Compounding the issue, the club saw sporting director Paul Mitchell depart.
Despite these challenges, the team’s core remains competitive. Their performance against Liverpool in last season’s Carabao Cup final shows they can match top sides – but squad depth must improve if Newcastle are to compete across all competitions.
