Police Used ‘Excessive Force’ to Suppress #EndBadGovernance Protests – Amnesty International

Amnesty International has criticized the Nigerian police for allegedly employing excessive force against protesters during the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations held nationwide from August 1 to 10.

The protests, sparked by Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions, reportedly led to a police crackdown that resulted in the deaths of at least 24 individuals, including 20 young adults, two children, and an elderly person, according to the human rights organization.

Amnesty International’s report alleges that victims of the police crackdown were shot at close range, often in the head or torso, suggesting an intent to kill. Two survivors reportedly sustained severe injuries, while others were affected by the indiscriminate use of tear gas.

The organization strongly condemned the actions of the security forces, labeling them as acts of “unbelievable lawlessness.” Amnesty also accused authorities of attempting to cover up the incidents to downplay the death toll.

Eyewitnesses from Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, and other states reported to Amnesty International that the protests initially began peacefully but descended into chaos when police intervened with live ammunition and tear gas.

Kano witnessed the highest toll, with 12 people killed, while Jigawa and Niger states each recorded three fatalities. Kaduna and Maiduguri also reported multiple deaths during the violent crackdown.

In addition to the fatalities, over 1,200 protesters, including minors, were arrested, with more than 146 facing charges of treasonable offenses. Reports from some detainees alleged instances of torture while in custody.

Khalid Aminu, one of the protesters, recounted being beaten with sticks and iron cables during his detention by the Department of State Services (DSS). Another protester, Michael Adaramoye, revealed he was detained for two months for participating in a demonstration in Abuja.

Despite substantial evidence, including eyewitness testimonies, medical reports, and video recordings, Nigerian authorities have denied any role in the violence. They have attributed the fatalities to “unknown gunmen” or dismissed the incidents as “fake news.”

Amnesty International has urged President Bola Tinubu to initiate an independent and impartial investigation into the alleged violations and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

The protests, sparked by widespread corruption and economic challenges, have brought renewed attention to concerns over the Nigerian government’s apparent disregard for human rights.

Amnesty International emphasized that the use of firearms against peaceful demonstrators violates international standards. The organization has called on authorities to put an end to impunity and ensure justice for the victims of these violent crackdowns.
