Peter Obi Discusses INEC Chair Outlook for 2027 Elections

Peter Obi weighs in on the leadership of INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan, stressing that Nigerian citizens hold the power to demand electoral integrity in 2027.

During a recent interview in Germany, Peter Obi shared his perspective on the leadership of Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Joash Amupitan as the 2027 election cycle approaches. Obi emphasized that it remains uncertain whether the commission head will conduct the process fairly, likening the chairman to a referee whose impartiality cannot be predetermined.

Obi confirmed he has not personally engaged with Amupitan since his appointment. He argued that the future of Nigeria depends on the younger generation, stating that the current trajectory must be corrected to unlock the country’s potential. He noted that a prosperous Nigeria would offer significant economic advantages to European partners, particularly German businesses.

Regarding the upcoming polls, Obi urged Nigerians to take collective responsibility. He suggested that if citizens refuse to accept poor practices, the system can be forced to change. Drawing on his experience as a former governor, he expressed optimism that persistent public demand can reform political institutions.
