PDP Splits into Two Factions Following Suspension of Key Leaders, Including National Chairman and Secretary
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is facing significant internal turmoil as its National Working Committee (NWC) has suspended key officials, exacerbating the party’s crisis.
The National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, and National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, were suspended due to allegations of misconduct, including disloyalty and insubordination.
In a statement released on Thursday, October 10, by the PDP’s National Director of Publicity, Chinwe Nnorom, the NWC announced that Ologunagba and Ajibade would be subjected to a disciplinary committee led by Deputy National Chairman (South), Taofeek Arapaja.
Their deputies have been appointed to take on acting roles immediately.
Tensions intensified when a faction aligned with the suspended officials retaliated by suspending acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu.
This faction accused Damagum and Anyanwu of undermining the party’s position in a legal matter involving 27 former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who switched allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The faction, led by Ologunagba, criticized Damagum and Anyanwu for communicating with the Court of Appeal, which they claimed was against the party’s interests.
In retaliation, they initiated suspensions, with Ologunagba referencing sections of the PDP Constitution to validate these actions.
The ongoing conflict within the PDP, centered around leadership and direction, has left the NWC divided, with no immediate resolution in sight.
As the factions compete for dominance, the party’s operational effectiveness is at risk, especially with pivotal elections approaching.
This struggle for control poses significant challenges for the PDP, with both sides accusing one another of betrayal and anti-party actions.
With the disciplinary committee set to conduct investigations, the party’s future remains uncertain as it navigates these leadership disputes.
