Patricia Greene, the veteran actress who held the record as the longest-serving cast member of the BBC Radio 4 drama The Archers, has died at the age of 95. For nearly seven decades, she portrayed Jill Archer, a character celebrated as a maternal figure famous for her culinary skills. She first joined the program in 1957.
The announcement was made via the Today programme, where Mohit Bakaya, the controller of the station, praised her exceptional work on the show. A formal tribute highlighted her lasting impact, noting that her portrayal of Jill evolved beautifully throughout the years. The team at BBC Radio 4 expressed their condolences to her family, acknowledging that the fictional village of Ambridge will feel the void left by her absence.
Jeremy Howe, the editor of The Archers, described Greene as a unique and humorous storyteller. He characterized her performance as a blend of strength, warmth, and joy, stating that collaborating with her was an honor. Greene, an alumna of the Royal Centre School of Speech and Drama in London, received an MBE in 1997. Beyond her iconic role, she appeared in various productions, including Crossroads, Doctors, and Casualty. Even after relocating to a care home in August 2023, she remained committed to recording her lines for the daily radio drama.
