Oyo Court Sentences Tailor to 12 Years in Prison for Raping Woman in Purdah
Justice Oyeyemi Ajayi of the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan on Wednesday sentenced Idris Rasheed, 23, to 12 years in prison for the rape of a woman in purdah.
The judge stated that the conviction was based on Rasheed’s confession, corroborated by a medical report confirming penetration and the presence of semen.
Justice Ajayi ruled that Rasheed was guilty as charged and ordered that his sentence begin from January 29, 2023, the date of his arraignment.
During the plea for leniency, Rasheed’s defense counsel, Mr. O. Ekundayo, highlighted that the convict had already spent 19 months and nine days in custody at Agodi Prison.
Ekundayo argued that Rasheed had learned a valuable lesson from the pain and hardships endured during his time in detention. He further noted that the convict had not been a fugitive before or during his time in custody and had conducted himself responsibly.
“The defendant is at the mercy of the court, based on the fact before my noble Lord, I prayed the court to exercise the judicial dexterity and clemency of the convict, “ Ekundayo said.
Earlier, the prosecution, led by Mrs. K. Oloso-Olayiwola, Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, informed the court that the convict, Idris Rasheed, a resident of Abayomi area, Iwo Road, Ibadan, was charged with rape.
Oloso-Olayiwola stated that the incident occurred around 10 p.m. while the victim, a 29-year-old petty trader and divorcee, was on her way home.
The victim had approached Rasheed for assistance in locating the nearest mosque where she could spend the night. Instead of assisting her, the convict allegedly grabbed her neck, threw her to the ground beside the road, and raped her.
The prosecutor emphasized that the offense violated Section 357 and is punishable under Section 358 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Oyo State 2000.
