Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has vowed that the Nigeria Police Force will remain professional, impartial, and non-partisan throughout the upcoming Osun governorship election scheduled for August 15. Speaking in Abuja during a visit from Civil Society Organisation (CSO) representatives, Disu emphasized that the force holds no stake in the election results beyond protecting the democratic will of the people.
Addressing concerns about voter intimidation, violence, and the potential for police bias, the IGP stated that the force has implemented robust security measures. He confirmed that personnel and operational assets have been deployed across the state, with intelligence efforts increased to preemptively neutralize risks. Disu warned that anyone caught engaging in electoral offenses, including vote-buying or violence, would face prosecution regardless of their political standing.
The delegation, led by CISLAC Executive Director Auwal Rafsanjani and joined by Yiaga Africa’s Samson Itodo, engaged the IGP to discuss critical security risks ahead of the vote. The CSOs highlighted that the Osun election serves as a significant indicator for the 2027 general elections. They urged the police to prioritize transparency to bolster public trust, emphasizing that neutrality is essential for a credible, peaceful, and fair electoral process.
