Senate President Godswill Akpabio officially inducted four new lawmakers into the upper legislative chamber on Wednesday. These senators secured their positions after winning recent bye-elections organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The newly sworn-in officials include Olaka Nwogu from the PDP for Rivers South East, as well as three APC representatives: Envulu Anza for Nasarawa North, Ikeje Asogwu for Enugu North, and Dayo Faduyile for Ondo South. These vacancies arose due to various circumstances, including the passing of previous senators Barinada Mpigi, Godiya Akwaashiki, and Okechukwu Ezea, as well as the appointment of Jimoh Ibrahim as a permanent envoy to the United Nations.
During the plenary session, Senate Clerk Emmanuel Odo led the new members through their Oaths of Allegiance and Office. Welcoming the group, Akpabio encouraged them to prioritize national interests over partisan politics. He emphasized the importance of mastering the 1999 Constitution and the current Senate Standing Orders to perform their duties successfully.
The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the state’s Attorney-General, Kayode Ajulo.
