The Rivers State branch of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has voiced strong opposition to a new mandate in Ikwerre Local Government Area that forbids all public gatherings without direct approval from the council chairman, Hon. Charles Wobodo.
Barrister Chizy Enyi, the party’s publicity secretary, stated that while the ADC acknowledges the serious security issues—such as violence and kidnappings—plaguing the region, these problems should not serve as an excuse to suppress constitutional rights. The party argues that freedoms of association and assembly, which are guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution, cannot be made subject to the personal whims of a local official.
The ADC claims this directive follows months of ongoing harassment and threats against its members in the area. They fear that if this policy persists, it could set a dangerous precedent, limiting political participation across Rivers State ahead of the 2027 elections. The party maintains that genuine security is built by targeting criminals, not by restricting the movements of law-abiding citizens.
Consequently, the ADC has demanded that Hon. Wobodo retract the order. They have also called upon the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, security agencies, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to intervene and ensure that all political parties can operate freely and safely.
