Osita Okechukwu Urges INEC to Prioritize Credible Elections for 2027

Former VON boss Osita Okechukwu urges INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan to ensure the 2027 elections are transparent, arguing that credible polls are the most effective way to discourage internal party impunity.

Osita Okechukwu, the former head of the Voice of Nigeria, has called upon INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan to prioritize the delivery of transparent and impartial elections. Okechukwu believes that when the electoral process is reliable, political parties are naturally incentivized to abandon internal misconduct and uphold democratic values.

This statement follows comments made by Amupitan during a visit to former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, where the chairman highlighted the necessity of internal party democracy. Okechukwu acknowledged these remarks, noting that the chairman has repeatedly championed this cause throughout 2026. However, he emphasized that the responsibility lies with INEC to create an environment where parties feel compelled to respect the will of the people.

According to Okechukwu, political leaders will strive to nominate popular candidates and maintain order when they trust the electoral system. Conversely, uncertainty surrounding electoral transparency often triggers internal conflict and impunity. He refuted allegations that the APC intends to manipulate INEC, asserting that the party requires legitimate, fair elections to bolster its governance and support the nation’s democratic advancement.
