Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate for 2027, has urged President Bola Tinubu to put the safety of Nigerians ahead of his re-election efforts. This advice follows the recent liberation of abducted students and educators in Oyo State.
Speaking through his aide Phrank Shaibu, Atiku praised the Nigerian Armed Forces for their bravery and effective rescue operation. He highlighted the contrast between the military’s success and the timing of the ruling party’s recent political rally, noting that the rescue occurred as the president’s party kicked off its 2027 campaign.
Atiku argued that a government’s primary duty is protecting its people rather than focusing on politics. He expressed disappointment that the president did not personally address the nation to honor the troops and reassure citizens, leaving the announcement to a spokesperson instead. The former vice president emphasized that leadership requires direct involvement during crises to boost public morale and send a strong signal to criminal groups.
While acknowledging the rescue in Oyo, Atiku reminded the government that many others remain in captivity across regions like Borno. He concluded by calling for sustained pressure on criminal elements until every abducted person is returned to their families safely.
