Osita Okechukwu, a key figure in the All Progressives Congress, has formally requested that Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress back the rotation of the presidency to the South. This move, he argues, is essential for the stability and health of the nation.
The appeal follows suggestions from the Southern Political Progressive Amalgamation Forum that Atiku should strategically select a running mate from the South for the 2027 elections. Okechukwu rejected this premise, claiming that such pressure led Atiku to abandon traditional zoning, ultimately harming the People’s Democratic Party.
As the former head of the Voice of Nigeria, Okechukwu reminded the former Vice President of his previous public defense of zoning during the Goodluck Jonathan administration. He asserted that because Atiku has previously enjoyed the advantages of these political agreements, he has a responsibility to uphold them to foster national unity and fairness. Finally, he urged Atiku to focus his remaining energy on strengthening the political opposition rather than criticizing the current administration.
