NUT leader sounds warning on deteriorating school safety in Nigeria

NUT National President Audu Titus Amba has urged the Nigerian government to prioritize school safety following a surge in attacks against teachers and students across the country.

Audu Titus Amba, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), has voiced significant apprehension regarding the escalating security crisis plaguing educational institutions throughout Nigeria. During a press briefing in Jalingo, Amba cautioned that consistent violence against students and staff jeopardizes the country’s academic prospects.

He emphasized that parents rely on schools to provide a secure environment for their children to thrive. Without guaranteed protection for teachers and learners, progress in the education sector remains stalled. Amba challenged the logic behind targeting educational spaces, asserting that those dedicated to teaching and learning should not be subjected to such brutality.

Highlighting recent tragedies in states like Borno, Oyo, and Kogi—specifically the murder of two teachers during WAEC exams—Amba called upon the government to fulfill its constitutional mandate to protect its citizens. He denounced the actions of criminal groups as senseless and inhumane, urging state and federal authorities to implement more robust security measures immediately.

Finally, the NUT president appealed for a collaborative approach to safety. He urged the public to assist security agencies by reporting suspicious activity, noting that preventing future attacks requires a unified effort from all levels of society.
